I have a 6 month old JD790 w/ 30 hours and it has the famous battery corrsion problem. Has anyone tied to get this warrantied by the dealer? If I replace it with a sealed automotive battery, will it still corrode? I really don't feel like having to clean the battery, cables and mounts every six months for the next 30 years!Thanks

I too use Amsoil for everything - EXCEPT I don't use their gear oil in manual transmissions (not that this applies to most tractors). I've tried it in two vehicles and in both cases, the shifting performance declined because the synchronizers would not "grab" as well. I switched to Redline MTL synthetic and have been extremely happy.

For the extra $3000, I would go with the new one. I believe you would get 2 years of warranty instead of one and the peace of mind knowing the tractor hasn't been abused in a landscape business for 350 hours. Also, for $18k, you could get a new, smaller tractor equipped similarly.

I believe Iseki makes the MF tractor (I think they are Japanese) The Mahindra appears to be Chinese from the pictures, but I can't be sure. A lot of dealers of off-brand tractors will tell you stories like that, but you need to research it. A lot of Kioti dealers will say that they use the same tooling as Kubota. (I guess 'cause they are both orange) The prices I have seen for Mahindra in the newspaper were only about $1000 less than comparable "name brand" tractors.If you stick with a name brand, it is likley to be more reliable and you have a much better chance of getting parts and service 20 years from now.

I would be very wary of buying a landscape trailer for hauling a tractor. There are some that would be OK, but many of the ones I have seen have very weak gate/ramps and weak rear ends. I have seen countless examples of the rear end of the trailer bent down during the loading process. You can usualy get an equipment trailer for the same price as a landscape trailer. Equipment trailers typically have stronger ramps and frames and have better tie-down locations.

As I recall from college chemistry class, the antifreeze will "freeze" at a lower temperature when mixed with water. I think there is some optimal ratio, but I can't remember it.

Why is it that disengaging the PTO on some tractors also stops the implements rotation instantly? It seems like a good way to overstress the tractor and the implement. When I disengage the PTO on my JD790 w/ Live PTO, the implement slowly coasts to a stop.

I own a 790 and I feel that the 3PH lift numbers are probably not accurate. I have a BushogSQ600 that weights 522 lbs and its center of gravity is waay farther back than the 24" where the lift capacities are rated. It has no problem picking the whole bushog off the ground. I can't think of a commonly used implement on a compact that has that much weight that far back.

I bought the same setup (790, R4, Loader) about 6 months ago. I love the tractor, but have to agree the ergonomics could be better. A hydro would be nice, but I could not afford one in another brand that had the same HP as the 790. Also, I feel the gear will probably last longer.

I just bought a 120v DeVilbiss 5 hp and I started doing some math on the wattage:
5 hp * 750 watts/hp/120v = 31.25 amps --> way more than the 20 amp circuit it is pulling from. I asked my electrician and he said the compressor can be wired for 120 or 240v. He said at 120v, it is really only putting out 2 1/2 hp. Food for thought.

Went to go clear some trails today with my 790, Bushog and chainsaw. I put the chainsaw in the bucket and went on my journey. I was carrying a pair of branch cutters on my lap so I could cut some annoying branches that overhung my path. While i was reaching to cut a branch while seated in the tractor with the Bushog running, I must have accidently un-curled the loader bucket and dropping my Stihl 026 chainsaw in my path. The next thing I know I heard a loud banging from the bushog and I thought, "that's funny, I don't remember a stump in this trail" I quickly raised the bushog and witnessed my 026 come flying out from under it. I think the engine may still start, but it is a total loss. I guess I now have one for parts. No harm done to the Bushog SQ600.

I looked at a 513 and a Bushog SQ600 squealer. The SQ600 appears to have heavier duty deck reinforcement and a much larger gearbox. The only drawback to the SQ600 is that its rubber shielding does not last very long when cutting big saplings. Apparently, Bushog has no chain upgrade for the shielding.

I would also like to add that torque values are usually based on the bolt being in motion when the torque is checked. This is because the coefficient of static friction is higher than the coeff. of kinetic friction. If you stop tightening the bolt and then try to start tightening it again, the torque reading will be very high until the bolt starts "moving" That is why people first loosen bolts to re-torque them. They have to be loosened to the point that the static friction is less than the kinetic friction at the proper torque.

I saw those recently in the Northern catalog. I would try to find out who makes them for Northern. Also, future parts and repair availability may be questionable if Northen decides not to carry that line anymore. You are saving about $4000 off a "name" brand similarly equpped, but you may be getting what you pay for.

My father-in-law's 18hp Satoh has an aftermarket front loader that has the pump driven off of the front of the crank. My old Massey 40 industrial loader also had one.

My Bushog SQ600 rotary cutter came with a rigid toplink but has a sliding linkage mechanism where it attaches to the cutter. This allows the cutter raise up significantly when it hits a stump and also allows it to work well on VERY concave surfaces. I couldn't imagine using one with totally rigid top link, but I also would not want to use one with a chain for safety reasons.

My Bushhog SQ600 roatary cutter met a rock today and dinged up the blades. The sharp portion of the blades is bent upwards in small areas. I was thinking that I would use my 4 1/2" hand grinder and grind off the dings and sharpen the blades while I am at it. Is there any tricks to doing this?
